Special Arrangements at Helsinki Central Railway Station’s Platform Area

The development project at Helsinki Central Railway Station, which began in 2019, has now entered its second phase. As part of this phase, the station’s platform area will undergo a renewal to better meet modern needs. These renovation works will bring temporary changes to pedestrian routes at the station.

The Postitunneli tunnel, which connects Eliel Square to the platform area, will be closed for weekday traffic starting Wednesday, March 12, at 7:00 AM. The tunnel will remain out of service on weekdays until late June or early July, but it will still be open for train passengers on weekends.

During the renovation, access to the lockers and restroom facilities will be via the entrances in the station’s western wing. The construction work may occasionally cause noise disturbances at the station.

The Platform Area Steps Into a New Century
The renovation of Postitunneli marks the beginning of a larger transformation of the station’s platform area. The upgrade will introduce several improvements aimed at enhancing efficiency and comfort, including:

  • Automatic doors to improve accessibility
  • Spacious glass-walled commercial spaces
  • New digital displays for real-time information
  • Additional seating areas requested by passengers

The renovations will be carried out in phases, requiring temporary adjustments to pedestrian routes at various points. Special attention will be given to passenger safety, and access through the station will remain as smooth as possible throughout the entire renovation period. The special arrangements at the platform area will continue until spring 2026.
